Parquet Floor Sanding

Many people think that Parquet flooring is difficult to maintain and to refinish, but this does not have to be the case. Parquet flooring, first invented during the Baroque era which was approximately 1625, has been used in the most beautiful of French homes. Parquet was and still is a favorite of the French royalty.

The biggest difficulty with parquet floors is that the wood grains run in different directions, in a 90° angle. This makes sanding difficult because you want to sand with the grain of the wood and not against it. Having flooring with wood grains all over the place makes the job more challenging. Using a drum sander can help to get a sanding job done quickly, but you really have to be an expert to use it correctly. Considering parquet floors are not cheap, you don't want to take the chance of ruining it. Not using a sander correctly can mean damaging the flooring grain but also there is the danger of creating gouges in the flooring that won't be able to be repaired.

Using a hand held sander could make the job little easier. Easier in that there is less of a chance of ruining the floor, but as a consequence making the job take longer overall. This type of sander means you have less of a chance of ruining your parquet floor. An orbital sander allows you to have more control so that you do not create deep gouges in your floor.

In order to refinish any floor, but especially parquet floors, you need to exercise patience. Sometimes you might need to use sandpaper, which will take a little longer, but this type of flooring needs extra care. The sandpaper grit will depend on how badly the wood floor is scratched.

Once the sanding job is completed, decide whether you want to stain your floor or not. Once you have stained, or, even if you haven't, it is a good idea to apply polyurethane to the parquet floor. You also have the option to use tung oil if you choose. However, make sure that you use at least three coats of polyurethane in order to get the best results. This type of home-improvement job can be difficult and time-consuming but the end result, a beautiful parquet floor, makes it definitely worth it.
