Refinishing Your Own Furniture

Like many of us, I am not the best woodworker. However, I still like the idea of making my own furniture. I just do have the finances to outfit a home workshop like the ones you see on television. I can, however, apply stains and finishes. Staining and Finishing only requires some basic tools and experience. Plus, if I totally mess up a piece of furniture when finishing it, all I have to do is to remove the finish and start all over again.

Sander Orbital

Some of the basic tools you'll need are: sandpaper in various grits, some good
paintbrushes, rags, and a ton of patience. If you have an electric sander, that speeds
up the sanding process but isn't required. I use a small orbital sander that both
vibrates and swirls for a smooth finish.

Sander Orbital

In my town, there are a couple of stores that sell furniture for just these types of
projects. They are usually called "unfinished furniture" or "raw furniture" stores.
They typically have a good selection of furniture in pine, oak, and other species of
wood. You'll usually find a good selection of furniture ranging from simple
bookcases, armoires, coffee tables, all the way up to complete dining room sets.

With a raw or unfinished piece of furniture, one of the toughest decisions is how to
finish it. Again, you will have several choices. You could simply paint it a color to
match your décor. Or, you could stain and finish it with a clear top-coat. And with
stains, you have a myriad of choices. You could stain it a natural-looking wood
color, or you could stain it a more vibrant color like red or purple! The main
difference between staining and painting is that paint is opaque and cover the wood
surface. Stains are transparent and let the beauty of the natural grain show through.

Your top-coat, or clear-coat on top of the stain can be either flat, semi-gloss, or
shiny. The new water-based polyurethane finishes are easy to apply, quick to dry,
and a snap to clean-up. And there aren't a lot of nasty fumes with them.

Popular options right now are hand-painted finishes. You can paint your unfinished
furniture to look like a charming folk piece or something from a French country
cottage. And if you are up to the challenge, you can apply a faux finish with paint to
your unfinished furniture to make it look like anything from stone to steel!

The most important thing to remember when you are finishing your own furniture,
is to have fun, take your time, and don't worry if it doesn't turn out exactly as
planned. Sometimes the best looking pieces are not the ones you started out trying
to create!

How to Build a Kitchen Cabinet

Kitchen cabinets are the most important element in the kitchen. Having the best kitchen cabinet can easily pull the look of your kitchen since it takes up most of the space in the kitchen. Picking out a ready-made kitchen cabinet can be the easiest thing to do, but also the most expensive. Why not build your own kitchen cabinet? Here are easy steps on how to build kitchen cabinets.

Sander Orbital

The most important thing to do is to analyze your kitchen's look. You need to plan out and think of the best kitchen cabinet design suited for your kitchen. Draw designs which you think will best fit your interest. You may also search designs on the internet or any home improvement books available.

Sander Orbital

After finding the best design, measure your kitchen. This will help you know the dimensions of the kitchen cabinet that you are going to build. You will more or less be able to estimate the size of the wool that you will use.

The next thing to do is to go wood shopping! You need to choose the kind of wood that you will use. Visit wood shops that sell plywood or other materials that can be used to build your dream cabinet. You can also ask if you can look at how different wood would finish after construction. When you have chosen the wood, you may show them your design and ask if they can estimate the price of the wood that you will use.

After the wood selection has been done, you need to buy other parts such as knobs, screws and hinges. They need to compliment the wood you are using for the cabinet.

Here comes the real deal in learning how to build kitchen cabinets, actually building the cabinets.

You need to gather all the materials that you need for building. These include the table saw, jig saw, router, doweling jig, clamps, shaper, orbital sander and other tools you may find necessary to use. Make sure that all of your materials are neatly placed in the area so that they would be easily located when needed for use. Make sure that the blades are sharp to ensure ease of use lessening risk for accidents.

Wear proper protective gear such as goggles when sanding, chiselling, hammering overhead or scraping. Ear protection can also be used since some tools can damage hearing, working on a loud noise level. Gloves are recommended since wood can cause major splinters and the equipment can cause damage since these are sharp tools.

You may choose to paint your cabinets to make it look more beautiful. Just choose the right colors and make sure to properly paint the cabinet to make it look better.

Follow your step-by-step plan on how to build kitchen cabinets to make sure that your construction is running a smooth course. A well-planned construction reduces accidents from happening too.

Finishing the cabinet can be the best thing that can ever happen to you. A little patience and perseverance is needed in order to finish the cabinet. With these, you will see how satisfying the results are, especially seeing the fruit of your labor.

Building Kitchen Cabinets - 5 Woodworking Tools You Will Need

Building kitchen cabinets can be a very rewarding experience. Once the job is finished and you realize that the beautiful piece that sits in front of you was once a stack of wood can give you quite a sense of accomplishment. Most people do not just jump right into cabinet making without some prior woodworking knowledge...although I have seen a few that did. They may have played around with a saw and hammer before but had no real experience in the area of fine woodworking. If this is the case, here is a list of just some of the major tools you really should have.

Sander Orbital

1. Table Saw

Sander Orbital

The most indispensable tool of tools. Do not just buy a cheapy though. It needs to be a fairly heavy-duty model to keep up with some of the work it needs to do. The cheaper models have small tables and are very light-weight. They tend to tip if you are running anything with a little length or weight through them.

2. Planer

This tool is a must if you want to get those smooth and clean edges to your wood. A small portable planer with a 10" width and a 5" depth will handle most jobs. These tools are great when it comes to squaring up you wood. You need all of your pieces to be very accurate in dimension or you will have a lot of headaches. The planer takes care of that.

3. Shaper

You can get by without one of these but I feel it is a good choice. A router can do pretty much everything the shaper can do but on a much lighter scale. The shaper gives you a nice solid table and a heavy-duty motor to power through those tougher jobs such as raised panel cabinet doors.

4. Miter Saw

There are plenty of these out on the market. A 10" miter saw will handle most all of your cuts. Radial arm saws are nice too but the portable miter doesn't take up as much room and you can move it anywhere. These tools are nice for clean and accurate cross-cuts.

5. Router

The router can do a lot of different jobs. Mainly, you will use it to put a nice finished edge to your piece of work, but you can buy a table for it and use it as a shaper too. There are all kinds of bits with different cutting styles available. They will do just about any kind of shaping project you could ask for.

Of course there are many other indispensable tools that you will need to build you own cabinetry but these are some of the major ones. An orbital sander and biscuit joiner would be much needed as well as a number of clamps and other small but very helpful items. There are a myriad of tools available for the woodworker today, but if you are just starting out these five are the basics that will get you started and on your way.

Parquet Floor Sanding

Many people think that Parquet flooring is difficult to maintain and to refinish, but this does not have to be the case. Parquet flooring, first invented during the Baroque era which was approximately 1625, has been used in the most beautiful of French homes. Parquet was and still is a favorite of the French royalty.

Sander Orbital

The biggest difficulty with parquet floors is that the wood grains run in different directions, in a 90° angle. This makes sanding difficult because you want to sand with the grain of the wood and not against it. Having flooring with wood grains all over the place makes the job more challenging. Using a drum sander can help to get a sanding job done quickly, but you really have to be an expert to use it correctly. Considering parquet floors are not cheap, you don't want to take the chance of ruining it. Not using a sander correctly can mean damaging the flooring grain but also there is the danger of creating gouges in the flooring that won't be able to be repaired.

Sander Orbital

Using a hand held sander could make the job little easier. Easier in that there is less of a chance of ruining the floor, but as a consequence making the job take longer overall. This type of sander means you have less of a chance of ruining your parquet floor. An orbital sander allows you to have more control so that you do not create deep gouges in your floor.

In order to refinish any floor, but especially parquet floors, you need to exercise patience. Sometimes you might need to use sandpaper, which will take a little longer, but this type of flooring needs extra care. The sandpaper grit will depend on how badly the wood floor is scratched.

Once the sanding job is completed, decide whether you want to stain your floor or not. Once you have stained, or, even if you haven't, it is a good idea to apply polyurethane to the parquet floor. You also have the option to use tung oil if you choose. However, make sure that you use at least three coats of polyurethane in order to get the best results. This type of home-improvement job can be difficult and time-consuming but the end result, a beautiful parquet floor, makes it definitely worth it.

Woodworking - A Task Based CoSHH Risk Assessment

It is essential for employers to undertake task based CoSHH risk assessments for each work activity that exposes employees to dangerous substances and chemicals which place their health at risk.

Sander Orbital

CoSHH legislation is especially relevant to the woodworking business including those employed as joiners and cabinetmakers etc. These employees however, are likely to perform a number of tasks outside these traditional roles. Assessment will not reflect real life if strict demarcation of job content is assumed. For this reason each task should be individually CoSHH risk assessed.

Sander Orbital

Many substances used in woodworking may be hazardous to health including wood dust, resins, adhesives, stains etc. Substances can be ingested in a variety of ways. Including inhalation, ingestion and skin absorption. The major health risks are occupational asthma and dermatitis. Some of the substances used can have grave consequences on the liver, kidneys and the central nervous system.

Dust formation is a prevalent consequence of the majority of woodworking businesses. Hardwood dust exposure is particularly carcinogenic. Exposure levels need monitoring in a CoSHH risk assessment. The assessment should examine if local exhaust ventilation is performing effectively. Dust lamp techniques can efficiently highlight flaws. It would be a better option to substitute wood that may cause asthma, by using wood such as Western Red Cedar.

Portable machines like orbital sanders and circular saws also need control measures. They need suitable extraction systems too.

When risk assessing the use of organic solvents and adhesives, such as those used in lamination or furniture assembly, it would be ideal to use simple indicator tubes to judge concentration levels in the air. Vapours and mists from solvents, paints and varnishes can cause occupational asthma. They can also lead to liver and kidney damage and affect the central nervous system. Some controls to consider here are the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the use of a good ventilation system. A safer alternative is to use water-borne products.

The provision of good washing facilities and skin creams is also essential in the woodworking business. Regular contact with wood dusts, resins, solvents and paints can damage the skin. This can result in sore skin and blotches which are signs of dermatitis. The use of gloves and overalls can hinder skin contact with such substances.

Employees should be involved in the CoSHH risk assessment process. This helps to cover all tasks that are undertaken and helps ensure that control measures will be adhered to.

Safety data sheets provide vital information and should be taken into account during the assessment.
